Terms you need to know:

Restructured Higher Education Financial and Administrative Operations Act – Passed by
the Virginia General Assembly in 2005. Go to this link for more information:

Virginia Personnel Act – Covers classified employees. Go to this link for more
information http://www.dpt.state.va.us/hrpolicy/policy/typemplo.htm.

Covered University – Any of the three universities (University of Virginia, Virginia
Tech, William and Mary) participating in the Higher Education Restructuring Act.

Transition Period – The period of time between July 1, 2006, and the implementation
date of new University Human Resource policies and benefits.

Classified Staff: Salaried non-faculty employees hired before July 1, 2006, who choose to
remain Classified under the Virginia Personnel Act and State Human Resource policies.

University Staff: Salaried non-faculty employees hired on or after July 1, 2006, who are
covered by University Human Resource policies. Also includes those Classified Staff
who choose to convert to University Staff. These employees are covered by Human
Resource systems established by the University and approved by the Board of Visitors.

Hourly Wage: Employees paid on an hourly wage basis including hourly employees and
wage/adjunct faculty without regard to the date of hire. These employees are covered by
Human Resource systems established by the University and approved by the Board of
Visitors.

Faculty: All salaried faculty employees without regard to the date of hire are covered by
Human Resource systems established by the University and approved by the Board of
Visitors.
